Bio

Catherine Richards is an artist and Associate Professor in the Department of Visual Arts and University Research Chair at the University of Ottawa. Her art explores the volatile sense of ourselves as we are shifting our boundaries - a process in which new technologies play a starring role. She is well known for her collaborative work with scientists and was awarded the AIRes fellowship (Artist in Residence, National Research Council of Canada). She has exhibited nationally and internationally including the Sydney Biennale, 2004, ZKM, Germany, National Gallery of Canada, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Powerplant, Toronto. Her work was awarded the Canada Council for the Arts Media Arts prize [Petro Canada 1993]. She received a Canadian Centre for the Visual Arts Fellowship (1993-94) at the National Gallery of Canada who subsequently commissioned her piece "Charged Hearts." She co-directed "BIOAPPARATUS," an interdisciplinary residency on art, intimacy and new technologies at the Banff Centre for the Arts that was one of the first to articulate the issues of new technology, the body and art practice. Her works have been supported by art councils and foundations including AT&T Canada and Daniel Langlois Foundation for Art, Science and Technology.
